The workshops I lead follow the Amherst Writers & Artists (AWA) methodology, utilizing generative writing prompts, and the opportunity to share writing in a facilitated small group setting and provide feedback on what is shared. The AWA method is deeply grounded in social justice and one of the foundational principles of this method is that writing as an art form belongs to all people, regardless of economic class or education level, and that a writer is someone who writes. As Pat Schneider who developed the AWA method wrote in How the Light Gets In: Writing as a Spiritual Practice, “In writing, we see, sometimes with fear and trembling, who we have been, who we really are, and we glimpse now and then who we might become.”
